The Farmers Market
[Dotted Ink Drawing, 2022]

Fridays were the best day out of all of the other days. My mother and I would go to the local farmers market at the inner hospital courtyard. Here is where I learned how to patiently peel, pick, and eat pomegranate seeds while waiting for my sister’s scheduled chemotherapy treatments.

At 10, The pomegranates were more than entertainment, they were my friends. The juice stung my cuticles and stained my fingers, but I found joy in methodically extracting every seed. There are about 613 seeds in the average pomegranate, each embodying a precious glistening ruby-like shape that fascinated me by their texture and buoyancy. As a young girl,  these precious gems represent the white blood cells she needed to fight off pernicious cancer vital in keeping her body alive.

The imagery of salient solution mixing with piercing crimson drops of blood, resulting in a subtle effervescent formation on the surface of the test tube, never goes away. To this day, pomegranates are my favorite fruit. Whenever I see shiny pomegranates at the market, I smile and find solace in it. They serve as a reminder for the battles I’ve encountered while depicting the times I’ve seen loved ones suffer.

The red color stains you for life.

Curves in Conversation
[Processing - Java,  2022]

As a first-year at UCLA, I often found myself wandering the campus, captivated by its architecture. The arched windows meeting the sky, the smooth bends of stairways, and the winding paths through gardens felt alive—like they were in conversation with the world around them.

Using Processing and my obsession with geometric shapes at the time, I explored how Bézier curves could recreate that sense of motion, breaking up the rigid lines with softness (and grace!)

In my code, I used anchor and control points to shape each curve, adjusting their placement to guide the flow and create a sense of rhythm. Layers of shapes and colors were built iteratively, with each line and curve responding to the composition as it evolved.

Unexpected Encounters
[p5.js - Javascript, Photoshop,  2023]

Inspired by my first art piece above, which drew from Bézier curves and my time in Los Angeles, this work explores the interplay between digital code and digital mediums likw Photoshop. After using Javascript, I layered geometric shapes to create a composition that reflects the spontaneity of jazz and the harmony of overlapping forms.

I wanted to encapsulate chaos. Jazz, with its unpredictable rhythms and harmonious clashes, served as the guiding force behind this work, where each shape and line feels like a note in a larger composition.
